چکیده

In the treatment of ice cloud radiative properties, two approaches have been taken: 1) parameterization of exact results from electro-dynamic scattering theory in terms of bulk microphysical properties (e.g., ice water content and effective size), and 2) parameterization of electrodynamic scattering theory itself in terms of explicit microphysical properties (e.g., size distribution parameters, ice crystal mass, and area relationships). The strength of the first approach lies in the single particle calculations while the strength of the second approach lies in the explicit coupling of microphysical and radiative properties. This study tests the second approach regarding the accuracy of ice crystal single scattering properties.

Use of circular cylinders as surrogates for hexagonal pristine ice crystals in scattering calculations at infrared wavelengths.

We investigate the errors associated with the use of circular cylinders as surrogates for hexagonal columns in computing the optical properties of pristine ice crystals at infrared (8-12-microm) wavelengths. The equivalent circular cylinders are specified in terms of volume (V), projected area (A), and volume-to-area ratio that are equal to those of the hexagonal columns. We use the T-matrix me...

Anomalous diffraction by arbitrarily oriented ellipsoids: applications in ektacytometry.

Anomalous diffraction by an arbitrarily oriented ellipsoid with three different axes is derived. From the resulting expression the relationship between the shape of the ellipsoid and the intensity pattern is immediately evident: The axial ratio of the elliptical isointensity curve equals the axial ratio of the elliptical projected area of the ellipsoid. A comparison of anomalous diffraction wit...

Anomalous diffraction theory for arbitrarily oriented finite circular cylinders and comparison with exact T-matrix results.

A general method is developed to formulate extinction and absorption efficiency for nonspherical particles at arbitrary and random orientations by use of anomalous diffraction theory (ADT). An ADT for finite circular cylinders is evaluated as an example. Existing ADT's for infinite cylinders at arbitrary orientations and for finite cylinders at the normal incidence are shown to be special cases...

Three Different Methods for Approximate Analysis of Bar Structures

In this paper, modified solutions were compared through utilizing three different approximate methods for bar structures. The modifications considered various changes in the initial design. To authors' best of knowledge, the studies have carried out on this matter so far are not broad enough and have considerred the simeltaneous variations of size, geometry and topology on the bar structures. I...

Modelling Diffraction by Facetted Particles

A method to approximate azimuthally resolved light scattering patterns and phase functions due to diffraction and external reflection by strongly absorbing facetted particles is demonstrated for a cube and compared with results from an exact method, T-matrix. A phase function averaged over a range of orientations of a strongly absorbing hexagonal column of aspect ratio unity has been calculated...
